How To Care For Silk Flower Arrangements

Blog

If you want to use floral arrangements in your wedding or as reception decor that you can enjoy for years to come, you can't go wrong with handmade silk flowers. The delicate, elegant-looking blossoms will never wilt or die, and will remain attractive as long as you take proper care of them.

No matter what your personal style or wedding decor theme is, you can have silk flowers custom-made to match it. For instance, if your wedding colors are purple and white, have a bouquet designed with realistic-looking fabric lilacs, hydrangeas, and lilies. You can also incorporate green silk leaves into the arrangement as a natural touch.

For the wedding reception, fill tall glass vases with lush bouquets of silk flowers, and place one bloom by the guests' place setting as sweet favors. When made properly, you may not even be able to distinguish the silk from real flowers.

After the big day, ensure that the bouquets and centerpiece arrangements will last as long as your love does by giving them some tender loving care. Although they're easy to maintain, there are a few basic cleaning and storing tips to keep in mind.

Here are some ways to keep your silk flowers looking fresh and vibrant.

1. Placement and Display

Although silk floral arrangements are delicate, you don't have to keep them locked in a closet. Feel free to display them on your dining room table or anywhere else in your home, as long as they're out of direct sunlight, which can make their colors fade.

As a decorative touch, fill the vases with clear glass gems as a creative alternative to water. You can also use seashells, stones, or colorful marbles as vase fillers if you desire.

2. Cleaning

Over time, silk flowers may attract dust and debris, such as pet dander, which will dull their vibrancy. You can brush them off  with a microfiber cloth or a feather duster as part of your regular cleaning routine. For a more thorough cleaning, use a soft-bristled toothbrush to loosen and remove grime.

If the blooms have harder-to-remove stains, such as grease or food, dip a clean, soft cloth into a warm water and gentle dish detergent mixture, and lightly apply it to the stains. Repeat as necessary and allow the silk to air dry.

3. Storage

When you're not displaying your silk bridal bouquets or arrangements, proper storage is essential. Thoroughly clean the flowers, place them in air-tight plastic bags, and store them in sturdy cardboard boxes so they don't get crushed.

Store the boxes in a cool, dry location out of direct sunlight.
